Shenandoah, Beautiful Daughter of the Stars
Lulu.com, 2008
A group of nine women in a book club in Connecticut got together and became "The Shannon Project." As a group, they wrote a children’s story for a little girl with leukemia.
Two of the women in the group, Shirley G. Webb and Janet M. Moreland, are part Cherokee. Shirley has published children’s stories previously, and so Shenandoah, Beautiful Daughter of the Stars was born. Janet published the book on Lulu.com from her home in Nevada.
Shenandoah, Beautiful Daughter of the Stars is a delightful story of a young Cherokee girl named Shenandoah and her friend, Takoda. Deftly written and characterized in the manner of traditional Native American legends, it tells how Shenandoah develops sensibility and courage while embracing the meaning and power of the dream catcher and the medicine bag.
Although there is some sadness in the story, love, hope, and happiness prevail. The charming cover and drawings portray interesting cultural details in the story and add dimension within the pages. Details of Indian mysticism reveal a wider, more miraculous world of childhood just as children see it and dream it. The events in this young girl’s journey into blind faith will enchant young and old alike.
